The development of cell phones has made it effortless for people today to make personal and professional calls regardless of time and location. This essay discusses why the merits for users and society outweigh the drawbacks.
There are considerable benefits of owning a cell phone. The first benefit is that this device can allow the users to keep in touch with their relatives and friends wherever and whenever they want. For example, international students living far away from home can effortlessly communicate with their family members over their mobile phone, thereby helping them feel less homesick. Another merit might be that the development of mobile phones has greatly contributed to maintaining social harmony. For instance, due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, people in many countries are not allowed to go out, so they may suffer from loneliness and depression. Fortunately, cell phones enable people to share their thoughts and feelings with others, thereby helping them get rid of pessimism.
There are potential drawbacks of using a cell phone. The main drawback is that using mobile phones can pose a risk to people’s life in some situations. For example, making a phone call while driving can distract drivers and this is perceived to be one of the most common causes of traffic accidents in Vietnam. Another disadvantage might be that individuals today, especially adolescents, tend to spend much more time chatting with their friends on social networking sites through their mobile phones than going out to have face-to-face communication. As a result, this can result in bad communication skills and people may encounter difficulties such as when they need to attend a face-to-face interview.
In conclusion, the merits of being able to keep in touch and maintaining social harmony seem to outweigh the drawbacks of the irresponsible and excessive uses of mobile phones. Given this situation, it seems that cell phones have become an indispensable tool for modern people.

Ví dụ, gọi điện thoại khi đang lái xe có thể khiến người lái xe mất tập trung và đây được coi là một trong những nguyên nhân phổ biến nhất gây ra tai nạn giao thông ở Việt Nam. Một bất lợi khác có thể là các cá nhân ngày nay, đặc biệt là thanh thiếu niên có xu hướng dành nhiều thời gian trò chuyện với bạn bè trên các trang mạng xã hội thông qua điện thoại di động hơn là ra ngoài để giao tiếp trực tiếp. Kết quả là, điều này có thể dẫn đến kỹ năng giao tiếp kém và thế hệ trẻ sẽ gặp khó khăn trong việc giao tiếp với người khác và tham dự các cuộc phỏng vấn xin việc trực tiếp.
