The table compares the figures for the top five tourist receiving countries and their revenue from international tourism in the years 2012 and 2013. Overall, it is clear that France was the most popular tourist destination over the period shown, and the USA earned the most revenue from international tourism.
Looking first at number of tourists, in 2012, France attracted the highest number of international tourists, with 83 million people, while the figure for travellers visiting USA was 66.7 million people. In addition, Spain and China each had approximately 57 million tourists, while the number of Italy’s international tourist arrivals was the lowest, at 46.4 million people. In 2013, while China received 2 million fewer visitors, the figures for people travelling to the other countries witnessed a slight increase, ranging from 1 to 4 million tourists.
Turning to revenue from international tourism, the USA earned by far the most revenue, with 126.2 billion dollars in 2012 and 139.6 billion dollars in 2013. In addition, France and Spain each earned approximately 53 billion dollars in 2012, followed by China with 50 billion dollars and Italy with 41.2 billion dollars. In 2013, while the figure for France remained nearly unchanged, Spain and Italy saw a rise to 60.4 and 43.9 billion dollars. The most interesting point is that despite the decline of tourists, China earned 1.7 billion dollars higher than the previous year.
